From backstory:
'Caldari society is steeped in military tradition. As a people, its members had to fight a long and bloody war to gain their independence, and even had to surrender their home planet to their hated enemies, the Gallenteans.(...)Even if the Caldari have not engaged in war for many decades, they still strive to be at the cutting edge of military technology and their vessels, weapons and fighting methods are inferior to none but the enigmatic Jovians.'
Riiiight... ;]
The thing about caldari is: To fly it solo in pvp, you need uber skills and be extremely specialised. And there ARE a few really good caldari ships:
Raven - can fit extreme buffer tank (could be both plated and shield buffered simultanously) and at the same time dish out insane damage
Sadly enough, that's the only damage dealer in caldari fleets.
Navy Osprey - who said caldari can't nano? Sure, you have to spend a lot of isk to fit it properly, but any good nano setup is very isk hungry. Perhaps not the highest dps out there, but good enough if you pick your targets (again, same rules apply to any nano ship)
Falcon - no explanation needed. Mind you though... Once again you have to be skilled and experienced not to die in it, as its paperthin. Bearing that in mind, I'd rather fly pilgrim/rapier any day, as I could easily escape the fight if I got jammed, and if I missed a cycle, I'd be out of cap vs amarr recon anyway =]
Onyx - lowsec/empire? nano it (yes, it does work! and it will have the biggest tank of all nano ships). it's a very very good ship.
Caracals - are extremely effective cheap missile boats.
Crow - fun to fly, nuf said.
Drakes - could be set up as damage sink or ham solo boat. get 5 of those and watch the 12k aplha missile armageddon.
I'm not gonna mention beagles/cerbs. I think they're sh**te compared to other hacs but maybe I just don't know how to fly them properly.
There's of course bb, scorp, merlin and rokh, but I don't fly them too often, so I'll leave comments to those that do.
So what the hell is wrong with caldari? well... first, precision missiles, ESPECIALLY heavies second, ship mass which is insane third, capacitor just sucks fourth, their versatility compared to other ships is just horrible (compare scorp and domi for example ;]) fifth, i would really like at least one more damage dealer
Apart from the first reason... the others are really my whines, but well... why not ;]
One thing for sure... Caldari can be used very effectively in PvP and can be flown solo too.
